The Current Chief Incumbent of Sri Sumanarama Viharaya

The current Chief Incumbent of Sri Sumanarama Viharaya is Eye Physician Shiromani Deshakeerthi, Chancellor of the International Traditional Medical University, Professor Mabulgule Nandarama Thero. Since the mid-1980s, following the Vattaddara Sumanarama tradition of eye treatment, he has continuously practiced the medicinal formulations and Kem methods (traditional astrological and ritualistic remedies) inherited from preceding masters. Alongside this system of Hela (indigenous) knowledge related to ophthalmic medicine, and through new treatment methods developed through research and experimentation, he continues to provide eye care and treatment to patients to this day.

Over the years, he has utilized his extensive knowledge and experience to treat the eyes of more than one hundred thousand patients, providing care to both local and international patients.

As global society undergoes a noticeable shift in attitudes and values, increasing numbers of people around the world are showing interest in Buddhist philosophy. At the same time, there has been growing attention toward natural foods, beverages, and traditional healing methods.

Against this backdrop, and in response to the continuing demand for treatments for eye diseases, Venerable Mabulgule Nandarama Thero also travels to Western countries to provide treatment and consultation to patients.

Udugama Sri Nigrodharama Purana Viharaya

Matikotumulla Saddharma Thilakarama Tampita Purana Viharaya

There are many “Physician Monks” who have illuminated the traditional Hela Ophthalmology  (indigenous eye medicine) of the Sri Sumanarama Purana Viharaya from generation to generation. Among them, Venerable Udugampola Gunarathana Thero is the first chief monk with documented records, while the service rendered by the venerable monks Udugampola Sobhitha, Vattaddara Pannasara, and Matikotumulle Pannaloka is highly venerated. The service provided by these chief monks over time in developing the Sumanarama temple into a temple complex is immense.
